Night Season (2010)
Night Season was borne of a cross-country move, a hellish, humbling year of sporadic employment, and the strange dreams I had after my house was broken into. It is a story about the restlessness and anxiety that characterized the months before I began shooting the project in the summer of 2010, when I was living in Eugene, Oregon. The photographs were taken in the hazelnut orchard in the next town over, by the tall laurel bushes behind my house, in my spider-infested garage--familiar places made unfamiliar through the enactment of new rituals. There was joy in the making of this work, running through the woods and playing alone as I did when I was a child. At the end of each day of shooting--dirt between my toes and blackberry thorns embedded in the palms of my hands--I felt freer than at the end of the last.
